The Power of an Apology: Removing Legal Barriers

Sometimes complaints to the Ombudsperson can be resolved by a simple apology. Yet public authorities in the past were reluctant to say they were sorry out of concern that the apology could trigger legal liability. Thanks in part to The Power of an Apology, the provincial legislature passed the Apology Act in 2006 – freeing officials to say they are sorry without fear the words would be used against them in court.
