March 24, 2024 is Whistleblower Awareness Day.
On this day, we recognize the vital and invaluable role whistleblowers play in strengthening the integrity and accountability of public sector organizations in British Columbia, Canada and around the world. As we acknowledge this day, we draw attention to and thank those who speak up and shine a light on issues that otherwise stay hidden.
“Since the Public Interest Disclosure Act came into force in 2019, my office has received numerous requests for advice and disclosures of alleged wrongdoing,” said Ombudsperson, Jay Chalke. “And while we continue to encourage and normalize a speak-up culture in public sector organizations, we know that more work can be done.”
Working to support organizations to ensure their internal whistleblowing policies are sound is a priority for the Ombudsperson’s office. Laying the foundation for organizations to support and normalize a speak-up culture is integral for employees to feel safe to identify and report potential wrongdoing. It also supports accountability, the safety of the public, employees and the environment, and the appropriate management of public resources.
Today, let’s unite and speak up in support of workplace cultures that support and lift up whistleblowers, and where management welcomes those who come forward and works to remedy instances of wrongdoing.
