No Notice, No Benefit tells the story of two people who applied for the BC Emergency Benefit for Workers – a one-time tax free payment of $1,000 – met all eligibility criteria at the time and received the benefit. Both were later told that because the criteria changed retroactively they were no longer eligible for the benefit and were required to pay it back. However, the ministry never informed these two people, nor thousands of others in the same situation, of the revised eligibility criteria and therefore, requiring them to pay back the benefit is unfair.
